A comforting homemade apple cider that captures the essence of fall with fresh apples, oranges, and warm spices.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 fresh apples (varieties like Granny Smith, Fuji, or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 cup sugar (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 tablespoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Start by washing and chopping the apples. You can leave the skins on for added flavor.
  2. In a large pot, combine the chopped apples, sliced orange, water, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 120 minutes.
  4. After simmering, use a potato masher or wooden spoon to mash the fruit and release the juices.
  5. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a pitcher, discarding the solids.
  6. Taste the cider and add sugar and lemon juice as desired.
  7. Serve it warm or cold, and if you want, garnish with a cinnamon stick or an orange slice.

Notes

You can switch some of the apples for pears for a twist. Fresh, quality fruit will give you the best flavors. Feel free to add a dash of ginger for extra warmth.
